The internet is a funny place. Through it we virtually create the latest craze, allow more people to catch wind of it, and let it snowball. Açai, an indigenous berry found in the rainforests of the Amazon, is what we’re shining the spotlight on today.
We get it. This superfood is so rich in antioxidants that it is called one of the world’s highest ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) foods. But it is also mistaken for a magical addition to one’s weight loss regime that helps burn calories, which isn’t valid at all. If anything, it might be remotely helpful due to its relatively low sugar content – but honey, those are calories you’re consuming too.
Having tried the Fruit Açai bowl ($6.80-$14.50) and Açai Cold Brew ($8.50) from Açai Project, Singapore’s first dedicated açaí superfood café, we guess it’s a pretty tasty way to get incorporate fibre and antioxidants into your diet. But if you’re buying into the whole fat burning thing, sorry to burst your bubble but it’s unwarranted. Açai serves as a great supplement and prevention from free radical damage, along with goji berries which come close in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Ultimately, if you’re looking to have a fruit-sugar-packed dessert of ice-cream-like consistency, açai might be your best bet. With its hefty price tag though, you might derive more satisfaction creating your own smoothie bowl at home.
